NASHVILLE, Tenn. — If you drive down Donelson Pike, you may notice a small green box.

It's called the "Blessing Box" and is filled with dried and canned food, toiletries and even food for babies. All of it has been donated by people passing by, and anyone can give to it or take from it.

Sonya Dunkum started the "Blessing Box" in Donelson.

"Has been a great outpouring from the community to put some new stuff in here," she said.

Dunkum came up with the idea after reading some blogs.

"I ran across an article about LittleFreePantry.org and their endeavors to have these in their community, and I just took that idea, borrowed that and tried to implement it here," Dunkum said.

Exercising due care, Dunkum went to the health department and even talked to the codes department to make sure her box would be safe and approved. They gave her two thumbs up and thanked her for being a blessing to others. "We're all helping one another, because I've been in times where I was in need being a single parent, so I can empathize with someone who may be out of a job, because there was a time that happened to me," Dunkum said.

The Donelson Church of the Nazarene agreed to keep the box on their property. Pastor David Hill said the response has been positive for the past few months.

"We've seen people come and get a blessing from the box; we've also seen people bring a blessing to the box," Hill said.

Hill said he hopes people will walk away knowing someone out there cares.
