WEST VALLEY CITY — A woman was shot in the leg during an argument between the occupants of two vehicles Wednesday, police say.

The incident happened about 10:30 p.m. near 4625 S. 4800 West. According to witnesses, the occupants of two vehicles "were exchanging words and then shots were fired from one or both vehicles at the other," said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.

Both vehicles were gone by the time police arrived, but numerous shell casings were found in the area, Vainuku said.

Detectives later were notified that a woman who had been shot in the leg through a car door had shown up at Jordan Valley Medical Center's West Valley Campus. She was in serious condition and taken by medical helicopter to another hospital, Vainuku said.

Police didn't know Thursday whether the woman was in one of the vehicles or an innocent bystander. No arrests had been made in the case Thursday.
