THE GREAT OUTDOORS — For the weekday mountain biker, this time of year proves more difficult to find trails to ride after work before the sun sets.

The new North Ogden section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, or the Connector trail, travels along the western face of the mountain overlooking North Ogden, thus extending your available riding daylight a bit.

The trail building of this 5-mile section finished in 2015, connecting 26 miles of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail from Pole Patch in North Ogden, to Beus Canyon in South Ogden.

There are a couple of trailheads to access from the north side, including the dirt lot on the North Ogden Divide Road, but the map here starts lower, providing better downhill fun on the way back complete with corner berms. There is a dirt lot at 1600 2750 North St. in North Ogden where bikers can park and access a trailhead.

At the beginning of this section of the trail, there will be a steady, moderate climb of roughly 750 feet in 2 miles until bikers reach Coldwater Canyon. This is a popular turnaround point for those who want continuous downhill back to the parking lot. Otherwise, the trail continues southbound downhill to join the older section of trail.

For almost the entire climb, Ben Lomond peak is in view to the north, along with the city of North Ogden.

Because the trail is fairly new, some of the dirt can be loose with some areas of exposure. Hikers, runners and equestrian riders are also welcome on the trail so please show courtesy and respect and share the trail.

Where is your favorite trail to go on a quick bike ride? Let us know in the comments.
