MIDWAY— A Michigan resident was arrested after an investigator says the man shot and killed a deer in Wasatch County.

Lucas McTaggart, case officer at the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, responded to the Brighton Estates area on Oct. 22 after receiving reports that a firearm had been discharged in close proximity to homes. He said four individuals were seen dragging the body of a deer away in an apparent attempt to hide it.

McTaggart said when he arrived to the area, he discovered Evan Sutherland, the Michigan resident, had allegedly shot the deer without a permit or a Utah hunting license. He said that the individuals tried to conceal the deer and the firearm.

Sutherland was booked into jail in connection with wanton destruction of wildlife, unlawful discharge of a firearm and obstruction of justice, according to the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office.

McTaggart said that while only Sutherland was arrested, the other three individuals might face charges after the Wasatch County Prosecutor’s Office finishes its investigation.
