SALT LAKE CITY — A West Valley City man was charged Monday for allegedly trying to rob a man of his shoes, then shooting him after he resisted.
Juan A. Mena, 19, is charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, and discharge of a firearm resulting in injury, a second-degree felony.
Mena approached a man at 1344 S. Emery St. on Oct. 16 and "demanded that (the man) give him his shoes," charges state.
The man refused and punched Mena in the face in self-defense, according to court documents.
"Mena then pulled out a gun and shot (the man) in the abdomen, then left the scene," the charges say.
The man later identified Mena via Facebook, according to police. The two men know each other.
Mena is currently out of police custody. A warrant for his arrest was issued Monday.
Mena, an alleged gang member, pleaded guilty in January to DUI and a misdemeanor weapons charge, court records show.
