A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY — Any Star Wars fan can recognize a TIE fighter sound effect when they hear it, even if it comes unexpectedly from a dog.

I can’t tell you the context of this video, nor soothe any fears as to why this puppy was in an animal urgent-care facility because there’s no explanation in the description to help us out.

But what I can tell you is that a basset hound named Geraldine is very glad to see her people. This I know because as she wags her tail she trots forward with purpose, and then, oh then, she vocalizes her happiness.

And what a vocalization it is.

Yes, Geraldine sounds almost exactly like a TIE fighter zooming in and out of frame in any given movie in the Star Wars franchise. And let me tell you, a Galactic Empire ship never sounded so good nor elicited so many laughs. (Personally, I got the those shaking laughs one gets when a joke is so clever and unexpected that it’s all you can do to keep it together.)

The brilliance of the video is the edit. Everytime Geraldine howls, the video cuts to a fresh clip of a TIE fighter. The more you watch it, the funnier it gets. You may think this whole video sounds dumb, and of course, it is, but it’s also perfect and hilarious in its dumbness. But, after all, isn’t that what the internet is all about?

In case you’re wondering, sound designer Ben Burtt created the TIE fighter sound effect for Star Wars using a blend of trumpeting elephants and a car driving on wet pavement. To learn a little more about Burtt’s sound design efforts for Star Wars, check out this interview Burtt did with NPR in 2010.
