If you're getting set for fall fashions, there are some important trends you'll need to know about. From ‘90s nostalgia and pinstripes to velvet and floral prints, fall 2016 has some surprising new styles you'll soon be falling in love with.

Velvet

This plush, warm fabric can be found everywhere this fall, and it's on everything. Literally, you'll see velvet dresses, jackets, rompers, robes, clutches, and yes, even shoes. This is ‘90s nostalgia in full force.

"Velvet has become a staple item in fall fashion because of its versatility and rich texture," said Alicia Richmond, stylist for Macy's at City Creek Center. "This season velvet is being worn with distressed denim and graphic tees. It's a fun way to mix a fabric that is typically featured in special occasion wear into a fashionable casual look that can be worn in either the day or evening." You can't go wrong with velvet this season.

Jewel tones

There's going to be nothing drab about the colder months this year. Dark jewel tones like black, cranberry, deep blues and greens will all be gracing high-fashion shelves. Whether you're encased in velvet or you want to go casual with a deep emerald top and jeans, deep rich colors will be your friends.

One-shoulder tops

Just because it's getting colder out doesn't mean you have to don your snowsuits quite yet. You can go formal or casual with the one-shoulder dresses and tops in this fall's fashion line-up. The Fashion Spot highlighted the perks of one-shoulder tops with adjectives like "streamlined" and "eye-catching," adding that the extra coverage makes them appropriate for work and great for layering.

Capelet

If you're worried about being a little chilly with your one-shoulder top, considering adding a capelet, which adds just enough coverage for warmth without covering up that adorable velvet top you've been dying to wear.

Pinstripes

No, we're not talking about those boring stripes on your dad's work suit. These bold, on-trend stripes can be found on men's and women's pants, coats and suits this fall. Elle magazine points out the best thing about these stripes: They can "lengthen and slim every body type." Yes, please!

Ruffles

Like velvet, you'll find ruffles everywhere from your neckline to your hemline and everywhere in between. This is one occasion where the phrase "go big or go home" is especially apt. If you're going to wear ruffles, do it boldly and proudly. This fall, you can't have too many ruffles.

Floral prints

You might normally associate floral with spring, but switch up your colors for dark hues and small patterns and you've got the floral sensation that swept New York Fashion Week. Look for them on skirts, leggings and tops.

Bomber jacket

When the cold sets in for real and you need to cover up your ruffles, try a bomber jacket and luxuriate in its coziness. USA Today spotted Kanye West sporting a cranberry-colored, velvet bomber jacket. Just in case you'd like to combine all that is great about fall 2016 fashion at once.

In the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, City Creek Center is the place to go for all of your fall fashion needs. With more than 100 stores and restaurants, City Creek Center has something for everyone.
