WEST VALLEY CITY — A gas leak shut down traffic, evacuated homes and closed an elementary school Tuesday, officials said.
3100 South is closed between 4400 West and 4700 West in West Valley City. Monroe Elementary School was closed for the day just before noon and about 50 homes were evacuated, according to the West Valley City Fire Department.
The fire department asked drivers to avoid the area. Questar crews responded to the scene to determine the source of the gas leak, the fire department reported.
After school officials learned of the gas leak, students evacuated Monroe Elementary School and relocated to a church just north of the campus at 4424 W. Cortney Drive. The evacuation procedure was strictly precautionary in nature, according to Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley.
