SALT LAKE CITY — A man was hospitalized with second-degree burns to both of his arms Monday night following a fire inside a storage unit.

The victim was working on a car with two other men around 8:35 p.m. inside a unit at 510 W. 200 North when the fire ignited, said Salt Lake City fire spokesman Jasen Asay. Crews arrived to find "heavy fire" coming from the unit, he said.

The man was taken to a hospital by ambulance. The other men were not hurt, Asay said.

Gasoline that was stored nearby in several 5-gallon gas ignited, causing a "liquid fire," which required a new strategy from fire crews to fight, according to the spokesman. The was contained to just one storage unit, he added.

The cause of the fire were undetermined Monday night. Investigators estimate the fire caused $80,000 in damage.

About 45 firefighters responded to the incident.
