LOGAN — Wednesday was a special day for Utah State coach Matt Wells, and it wasn’t just because the Aggies worked out in full pads for the first time of fall camp.

But that helped, too.

“This was probably the most competitive practice we’ve had, and there was a lot more give-and-take,” said Wells, who celebrated his birthday with his team. “Adding full pads to the mix is like a shot in the arm, and there are some new drills that go with that.”

LaJuan Hunt used the pads to barrel in for a 4-yard touchdown run, and Devante Mays added a 15-yard scoring run during 11-on-11 drills.

But after practice, it was center Austin Stephens who got the coach’s attention.

While Wells was addressing the media, Stephens sneaked up on the fifth-year head coach and dumped ice water on Wells. The coach had a good laugh about it — but no one asked what Stephens punishment might be for dousing Wells for the first time in several years.

The whole thing was caught on camera. Click the video above to see Wells’ cold reaction.
