HERRIMAN — A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after being thrown off his ATV Saturday morning, police said.

Emergency crews were dispatched to a report of the accident in an open field near 11800 S. 5100 West at approximately 10:50 a.m., according to Unified police detective Chuck Malm.

Malm said two 15-year-old boys were riding their separate ATVs through the field when one of the boys hit a bump and fell off his vehicle.

“(He) was going a little too fast for the conditions of that field and just didn’t see a bump,” Malm said. “He hit the bump and was bucked off the four-wheeler (and) landed into the ground head-first.”

The second boy, who was following close behind, witnessed the accident and called 911. Malm said that crews happened to be nearby and were able to reach the scene quickly.

The boy was wearing a helmet, which did lessen the impact, Malm said. However, the boy did receive “serious” facial injuries and was airlifted to Primary Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

The boy is expected to survive, Malm added.

Malm credited the boy for wearing a helmet and safety gear, and said the boy’s injuries could have easily been worse had he not been wearing it.

“I would imagine had a big impact as far as saving his life,” Malm said.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
