KAMAS — Helicopters evacuated two Boy Scout troops from a hiking trail near a wildfire Thursday evening, the U.S. Forest Service reported.
The troops were hiking near Smith and Morehouse Reservoir in Summit County when fire authorities evacuated them because of an encroaching wildfire, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Loyal Clark.
The Scouts had been camping in the area, Clark said. Emergency workers made the decision to use helicopters for the evacuation in part because sunset was approaching, she said.
The so-named Box Canyon Fire had reached about 20 acres Thursday night, according to Clark.
No structures were being threatened and no road closures were put in effect Thursday.
Clark said firefighting operations were suspended at sunset and will resume Friday, when investigators will also try to determine what started the fire.
Clark warned campers in the area to be especially vigilant by thoroughly dousing campfires when they're finished using them.
"Conditions are extremely dry. Please be cautious and careful," she said.
