BOUNTIFUL — Inside the Bountiful City Cemetery is an area where infants are buried, but those driving by may not know it.

There is nothing concrete to recognize the area, but Kyra Dunshee wants that changed. Having lost a baby herself more than a decade ago, the mother knows the infant and children’s area of the Bountiful City Cemetery is a special place to many people.

After reading about a statue created for the same type of section at the Lehi Cemetery, Dunshee is trying to raise funds for a similar statue in Bountiful.

“There are 380 babies and children buried there, and we just feel like it’s important to have something that designates this spot and brings attention to what a really special place it is,” Dunshee said.

Bountiful City councilwoman Kendalyn Harris could not confirm the number of baby graves in the cemetery but said the City of Bountiful has agreed to pay for about $40,000 of the estimated $70,000 statue.

Dunshee is hoping to raise the remaining $30,000. She thinks she has about $3,500 right now, she said.

Friday night at the Bountiful City Park, Dunshee’s sons’ band, Foreign Figures, will put on a benefit concert to help raise money for the statue. The concert starts at 8:30 p.m., and Dunshee said they are asking people to contribute a suggested $5-per-attendee donation. They are suggesting patrons bring their own lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.

Dunshee is hoping to raise enough money to get the same statue that stands in the Lehi Cemetery. That bronze statue depicts a father and mother holding their baby, Dunshee said.

In addition to donating to the statue at the concert, those who wish to contribute can do so at redbasket.org* or by mentioning the Bountiful City Cemetery statue at any U.S. Bank and donating to an account* there.

“So we feel like it will enhance the baby section and help people feel a sense of that it’s a special place,” Harris said. “It’s a place where a lot of people go for peace, even just recreation like to go on a walk or, and I think a statue there will really set it apart as a special place where these children and babies can be remembered.”
