SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The mother of an American jailed in Venezuela is planning a rally to support him.

Laurie Holt says the event is planned for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City. She says he was mistakenly accused, and hopes the rally will draw attention to his case.

Her 24-year-old son Josh Holt was arrested on suspicion of weapons charges nearly a month ago, after he traveled to Venezuela to marry a woman he met online. They had planned to return to the U.S.

Venezuela authorities contend Josh Holt was a "trained gunman" and his wife's apartment was used to stockpile weapons.

Laurie Holt denies that. She says her son has gotten sick and has been losing weight since he was jailed.

Josh Holt is among 12 U.S. citizens jailed in Venezuela.
