TOOELE — A man accused of killing his mother in her Tooele home was at first found by police asleep on a bed, and later threw himself on the grass and cried uncontrollably, according to court documents.

Jesus "Jesse" Eldon Aragon, 44, of Tooele, was charged Monday in 3rd District Court with murder and aggravated assault, first-degree felonies.

On Friday, police were called to the home of Marcella Aragon, 245 E. 600 North in Tooele, for a welfare check.

Jesus Aragon's brother reported that Jesus was there and "acting strangely," according to charging documents. Jesus Aragon does not live at his mother's house.

When officers arrived, they spotted him through an open window sleeping on a bed. Upon further investigation, they found his mother's body on the living room floor just inside the front door, the charges state.

"There were obvious signs that she had been the victim of an assault," court records state.

An exact cause of death had not been released as of Tuesday.

Jesus Aragon, who stepped out of the house at the officers' request, then "threw himself on the grass in front of the residence and he began crying and screaming," the charges state.

He has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1994 that includes convictions on drug-related charges, assaulting a police officer, interfering with arrests and breaking into his mother's home, according to state court records.

Marcella Aragon filed for a protective order against her son in 2014.

Also that year, Jesus Aragon was charged with burglary, vandalism, trespassing and failing to stop at an officer's commands for breaking into the same house.

As part of that case, a competency evaluation was ordered and a judge determined on Dec. 16, 2014, that Aragon was not competent to stand trial, according to court records. Another competency hearing was scheduled to be held in January, at which time he entered into a plea bargain. He was sentenced to time already served while at the Utah State Hospital.
