SALT LAKE CITY — It’s been an offseason of transition for the University of Utah men’s basketball team, with several players moving on from the program as a result of graduation, transferring to another program or declaring for the NBA draft early.

On Tuesday, Utah announced that its director of men’s basketball operations, Phil Cullen, has accepted a front office position with the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA.

“I am very happy for Phil and would like to thank him for both his commitment and energy that he brought to our basketball program,” head coach Larry Krystkowiak said in a prepared statement. “He will be working for one of the most respected franchises in the NBA, along with one of the best general managers in the business. We wish Phil the very best with his new endeavor.”

Cullen has been on staff at Utah for the last four years, spending the first three years as the director of player development. Cullen took over as the director of men’s basketball operations last summer after Norm Parrish left for an assistant coach job at Hawaii, which was quickly parlayed into a head coaching position at Westminster College.

Cullen played at the University of Utah during the Rick Majerus era, playing from 1998-2000. He was known for his 3-point shooting while playing at Utah and is currently No. 7 all-time in career 3-pointers made (153) and 3-pointers attempts (396).

Krystkowiak announced that a search for Cullen’s replacement will begin immediately.
