SALT LAKE CITY - More than 18,700 votes later, Aggie Ice Cream handily won KSL.com’s poll for the best local ice cream shop.

The on-campus parlor beat out 15 other contestants by taking 33 percent of the votes. BYU Creamery came in second place with 22 percent of the votes and Leatherby’s, with 15 percent, rounded out the top three.

Aggie Ice Cream has been a part of Utah State University for over 100 years. The restaurant is ran by staff and students from the school’s Food Science program. Their menu includes 26 flavors of ice cream, as well as sandwiches and cheese boxes.

“It’s excellent! We’re not surprised, but we‘re happy,” Creamery Manager Dave Irish said when hearing that his creamery took first in the poll. “A lot of people come here and buy our ice cream and sell it throughout the state. We have a large following.”

One of the factors that attribute to Aggie Ice Cream's success is the dessert’s freshness, Irish said.

“Many companies make a lot of ice cream in the winter and sell it throughout the summer," he said. "We are more made-to-order. The difference in taste between one month and six months makes a big difference.”

July has been a month filled with food polls on KSL.com. Crown Burgers won Utah’s best burger place, Hires Big H was voted as the best local place to get French fries, and FiiZ Drinks won best local soda shop.
