BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — A 25-year-old man was in critical but stable condition Saturday after a high-speed crash in Big Cottonwood Canyon, according to Unified police.

A motorcycle was traveling down the canyon at a high rate of speed about 12:30 p.m. when the driver lost control for an unknown reason about a quarter-mile before the S-curve, and the motorcycle crashed into the mountain off the side of the road, said Unified police detective Ken Hansen.

The man was wearing a helmet and other protective gear, Hansen said. The motorcycle had an Arizona license plate. The motorcyclist, whose identity was not released, was taken to a local hospital.

His motorcycle was smashed into many pieces, Hansen said. Traffic was backed up in Big Cottonwood Canyon Saturday afternoon as detectives investigated the crash and tried to clear the road of parts.
