BELLINGHAM, Washington — During these hot summer months, it seems that even large predators need to cool off. A recent video from Washington captured the strange sight of a mountain lion going for a swim in a lake near the Canadian border.
According to the Bellingham Herald, the video was shot at Lake Whatcom by a local resident named Jordan Kirbyson. The man was just finishing a morning of water skiing with his father and a friend when he noticed the big cat swimming away from an island in the middle of the lake.
Kirbyson quickly grabbed his cellphone and filmed the cougar as it calmly made its way toward shore. After a half-mile jaunt, the big cat reached the far side of the lake and disappeared into the trees.
“We were just in awe of the majesty of this thing that was going on in front of us,” Kirbyson told the Bellingham Herald.
While the video that Kirbyson posted to YouTube is quite short, he said they actually watched the cougar swimming for about 15 minutes. And the three lucky boaters knew they were witnessing something unique.
“It was truly a unique and special experience,” Kirbyson said. “It was amazing.”
