ROCKPORT STATE PARK — With summer heating up, it’s a great idea to hit up a hike that also gives people the option of swimming.

Located about 25 miles from Park City, Rockport State Park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including a nice trail that can be used for hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding. The Lake View Trail is roughly 3 miles roundtrip and offers a spur loop for a longer hike.

Hikers will need to pay the $10 day-use fee when entering the park. The trail is located on the east side of the park and can be accessed from the main road. Hikers should park in one of the nearby lots and walk up to the road to start the hike. The trailhead is clearly marked with a sign on the side of the road.

The trail is fairly flat for most of the hike with just a few gradual inclines, making it a great hike for families with small children. It winds through the trees for awhile before running parallel to the lake and offering great views of the reservoir. It eventually crosses the main road and continues toward the reservoir.

Eventually, hikers will come to a pile of boulders that offer a great view of the whole reservoir if they scramble to the top. The rocks also provide a great spot for a picnic. Hikers can continue on the trail and either take the loop back toward the trailhead and the parking lot or can take the spur loop for a longer hike — depending on how much time people have.

There is also a variety of wildlife in the state park and hikers may get lucky and see some mule deer. Hikers will also see a variety of wildflowers and some cacti and wild onions along the trail.

Length: 3 miles roundtrip

Time: Between 1-2 hours

Difficulty: Easy
