OGDEN — Ogden police identified the 4-year-old boy who died in a house fire over the weekend.

Ryder Gaspa was found unconscious inside a home at 225 29th St. when emergency crews arrived at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Ogden Police Department. Investigators said it appeared the boy, who died shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital, started the fire by accident while playing with a butane torch.

The boy’s mother, 28-year-old Kimberly Gaspa, remained in critical condition Monday, according to police. They said she sustained severe burns in the fire.

The two family members were found in the basement, where there was smoke. Fire crews that responded to the home said they found "light smoke" but no fire when they arrived.
