LOS ANGELES — Utah native Trevor Lewis has carved out a nice stay in Southern California.

The 29-year-old center had 10 goals and eight assists in 2015-16 after winning two Stanley Cup titles with the Los Angeles Kings since being drafted in the first round of the 2006 NHL entry draft.

Why not extend his time?

Lewis signed a four-year contract extension with the Kings on Saturday. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound forward appeared in a career-best 75 regular-season games last season with Los Angeles, when he also registered 20 penalty minutes and was the players’ Unsung Hero award winner for the fifth consecutive year.

Lewis is the only Utah native to win a Stanley Cup title, and the veteran skater grew up a rink rat in a Cottonwood Heights neighborhood known more for producing standout skiers and snowboarders. He joins Roy native Jim McMahon of the 1985 Chicago Bears/1996 Green Bay Packers and West High graduate Fred Sanford of the 1949-50 New York Yankees as the only Utahns to win two championships in a major sports league.

Three other Utah natives have appeared in the NHL: Richard Bachman, Steve Konowalchuk and Dylan Olsen. Salt Lake City-born Garrett Metcalf was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the sixth round of the draft in 2015.
