SALT LAKE CITY — A decision on whether an uncle and niece will stand trial on charges stemming from a 2004 killing won't be made until September.

Clint Veon Snyder, 52, and his niece, Brittany Lin Snyder, 31, both from Murray, were charged in January with murder, a first-degree felony. Both are accused of killing Michael Lewis, 24, whose body as found in a garbage can at 5316 S. Hamlin Street on March 10, 2004, a day after he was reported missing.

Following a two-day preliminary hearing this week, 3rd District Judge Vernice Trease deferred ruling on whether to bind the two over for trial Thursday. The preliminary hearing is scheduled to conclude Sept. 1.

According to charging documents, Lewis died of multiple stab wounds and had been deceased for several days before he was found. The medical examiner found stab wounds to Lewis' neck and torso, and a cut on his scalp with no defensive wounds.

Police say Snyder was "upset" with Lewis. In the basement of the vacant structure, Lewis was allegedly confronted by both Snyders and a third person who is only identified as B.D. in charging documents. Brittany Snyder used pepper spray on Lewis and then stabbed him after her uncle pulled him to the ground, according to police.

When Clint Snyder released the motionless Lewis, Brittany kicked the man in the head several times, according to charging documents. Clint Snyder and B.D. then allegedly put Lewis in a trash can.

Bail for the Snyders is set at $1 million each.
