ST. GEORGE — A big change is happening to southern Utah. In fact, it's the biggest construction project ever to take place in Washington County.

Dixie Regional Medical Center is undergoing a massive addition. According to Terri Kane, the regional vice president of the Dixie Regional Medical Center, the project will end up doubling the size of the current hospital.

The project is slated to be completed by the summer of 2018 and will add 500,000 square feet to the existing 425,000 square foot facility. That means Dixie Regional will have four new buildings on campus when the dust settles.

“We’re creating spaces for all of those, and adding additional capacity for all the growth they’re experiencing,” Kane said.

There will be a new home for the women and children services, mental health, neuroscience, outpatient clinics and the nationally acclaimed cancer program, as well as more beds and operating rooms.

Shuttle services will run throughout the campus to help ease congestion during the project.

“We’re blessed because we're the only hospital in St. George, and we take that responsibility to heart,” Kane said. “Everything that we’ve been able to achieve we’ve done with our community. Not only supporting our services but giving their time and volunteers and giving us their resources. The community has a big part of this hospital.”

For the past 40 years Intermountain has worked hard to keep true to its promise to provide great healthcare, and it all started with a handshake.

“Our community continues to grow, and Intermountain continues their commitment," Kane said. "And $300 million to add 500,000 square feet I think is a pretty great commitment on a handshake and a promise.” Jenniffer is a Special Projects Producer who heads up the Your Life Your Health, Zero Fatalities and High 5 initiatives.
