SALT LAKE CITY — Residents and family members gathered to honor fallen soldiers at Fort Douglas Monday.
A color guard and bagpiper led a march to the cemetery where Army Col. Sean Kirschner, commander of the Dugway Proving Ground, and Sen. Orrin Hatch addressed the crowd.
"(The fallen) deserve to be heard, remembered and honored on Memorial Day and beyond," Kirschner said. "So first, let us honor and remember those members of the Armed Forces who fell in combat."
"Second, we must praise the courage of the family members and loved ones bereaved by our wars," Kirschner continued. "And finally, let us acknowledge the men and women who died for this country after a life of service. People who will not make the pages of history, but who never the less require our respect and homage."
The program also included a wreath placement, 21-gun salute and taps.
