WEST VALLEY CITY — Police have identified the 30-year-old man killed Saturday in a possible road rage incident, as well as the man arrested in connection to the shooting.

Police identified the man killed as Maluolefale Toala, whom they say was riding his longboard along 5600 West near 3500 South at about 2 p.m. Saturday, according to West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.

Vainuku said at the same time Toala was approaching 3500 South, Aaron Pierce, 24, was the front passenger of a vehicle headed in the same direction.

The two got into an argument before police said Pierce exited the vehicle and pointed a gun at Toala. As the argument continued, police allege Pierce shot Toala once in the chest and that Toala died at the scene, Vainuku said.

Vainuku said Pierce remained at the scene and cooperated with officials, and was later arrested and booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of criminal homicide.

It is unknown at this time if Pierce has obtained any legal representation.

Police are still unsure what caused the argument, Vainuku added, but West Valley City police Lt. Dalan Taylor said Saturday police believed it was a road rage incident.
