TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — After Friday night’s 6-2 loss to No. 8 Florida State, the Utah softball team knew it had a hole to climb out if it wanted to advance past the first NCAA Super Regional in program history.

Jessica Warren emphatically announced the Seminoles’ intentions early in game two.

Warren ripped a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to lift Florida State into the Women’s College World Series with a 3-0 win over Utah in Saturday’s second Super Regional contest.

Florida State pitcher Meghan King (25-3) held the Utes to four hits with four strikeouts and one walk in the complete-game effort. Utah pitcher Miranda Viramontes took the loss in relief, throwing three strikeouts and three walks in 6.1 innings.

Shelby Pacheco registered the first hit of the game for Utah (36-21) in the third inning with a single to right centerfield. But King retired the next three batters on a field’s choice, a strikeout and a pop-fly to get out of the inning without any damage.

Utah didn’t go down without a few defensive gems. Sammy Cordova snagged a diving catch in shallow right field, then turned a double-play to end the top of the fifth as the Seminoles threatened again.

Florida State (53-8) plated another in the top of the seventh when pinch runner Korina Rosario came in on Morgan Klaevemann’s bunt.

Utah was playing in its first Super Regional in program history, and hoping to advance to its first Women’s College World Series since 1994. But the home team took a 6-2 win Friday and forced elimination in the best-of-three series before finishing off the sweep.

Ellie Cooper went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead Florida State.

Hannah Flippen, Anissa Urtez, Hailey Hilburn and Pacheco each registered a hit for the Utes.
