THE ANIMUS — Video game movies have never been that great. We've had high hopes for many of them, but most if not all have fallen flat.

When it was announced a movie version of "Assassin's Creed" was in the works you could almost feel all of the eye rolls from people around the world. Then we found out that the incredibly talented Michael Fassbender was not only starring in the movie, but also producing and planning sequels. This garnered a lot of head scratches as we tried to figure out why a two-time Academy Award nominated actor would tackle a video game movie. Then a glimmer of hope entered as we thought to ourselves, "Wait. A two-time Academy Award nominated actor is taking on a video game movie. We're finally going to get a good one."

That's the hope, but not a lot of us were really optimistic. Now, we can take another small step into the optimism bubble now that the first official trailer for "Assassin's Creed" is now available.

The trailer has some exciting visuals that will resonate with fans of the game. If you're not a fan of the game or don't even know what it is, there's still plenty here to intrigue you. The fact that other powerhouse actors like Academy Award winners Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons and veteran actor Brendan Gleeson are joining Fassbender as well as a proven director should get people at least curious.

The trailer sets up the storyline that follows closely to some of the game's many entries. Here's an official synopsis of the film: "'Assassin’s Creed' follows a character by the name of Callum Lynch who, through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day."

The trailer makes the film look dark, which is in line with the games, but it will be interesting to find out what the rating will be. The game itself is rated M and contains a lot of violence and language. If the filmmakers make it true to the game it may very well be rated R, but this is also an expensive film, which would lead us to believe the studio may want to play it safe and stick with a PG-13. The recent box-office success of "Deadpool" may sway the production to consider an R rating, however.

The big question now is can Michael Fassbender and director Justin Kurzel actually make a good video game movie? Well, we're going to have to wait until December 21 to get that question answered.
