FARMINGTON — Commuters on I-15 faced significant delays Saturday morning after a box fell off a truck, leading to multiple accidents, officials reported.

A call reporting debris in northbound traffic on I-15 near Lagoon came in at about 9:12 a.m., according to Sgt. Chamberlin Neff of the Utah Highway Patrol. He said before officials could arrive, there was a multi-vehicle crash.

“Someone was hauling a box of chairs that came out of the bed of a pickup truck, from my understanding, and just laid in the middle of the fast lane of I-15,” Neff said. “People can’t react at 70 mph with something coming around the corner and being in their lane.”

At least two vehicles hit the debris, which caused secondary crashes, according to Neff. He said investigators are working to identify the driver of the pickup truck, who will be cited for failing to secure a load.

No injuries were reported as a result of the crash. Multiple lanes of I-15 northbound were closed for just over an hour as a result of the debris and accidents.
