SALT LAKE CITY — On a beautiful Utah Spring day, just about everyone wants to be outside, including Kevin Hashimoto.

Hashimoto had to work Tuesday but couldn't pass up the chance for a quick ride.

"I feel like a kid when I'm on my bike," he said.

Hashimoto knows a thing or two about nice bikes.

"Everything from the wheels to the pedals to the components even down to the cables," he said.

That's how he knew something wasn't quite right a couple weeks ago at the 7-Eleven located at 800 South and 200 East.

"I see a guy roll up on a really nice bike," Hashimoto explained. "(He was) riding around in torn jeans with shoes that don't clip into the pedals on a bike that's probably two sizes too big for him. It just didn't fit."

Kevin suspected the $5,000 bike was stolen.

"The bicycling community here in Salt Lake is very tight-knit," he said.

He felt like he had to do something so he bought the bike for $300.

"(It was) a fraction of the cost," Hashimoto said. "He had no idea of the value of the bike."

Hashimoto has contacted police, called local bike stores and even posted to social media sites about what happened, but so far no luck.

"I'm trying to do the right thing," he said.

Hashimoto said he's not looking for any kind of reward.

"At the end of the day, nothing would make me happier than to get the bike back to its original owner."

Hashimoto asked KSL to show very little of the bike because of its several distinctive upgrades he's hoping the rightful owner will be able to describe.
