SALT LAKE CITY — Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, filed for re-election Friday, and has a Democratic opponent who also declared her candidacy in Utah's 2nd Congressional District.

Salt Lake businesswoman Charlene Albarran said she could no longer stand on the sidelines hoping things will get better in the country.

"I am a problem solver and I get things done," she said. "I am running for Congress so I can help improve the lives of others who don't feel they have a voice."

Albarran, a licensed pilot, founded an aviation rental company and foundations that provided food and shelter for homeless people and a safe home for domestic violence victims and homeless women.

A former Air Force pilot, Stewart is seeking a third term in Congress.

"I look forward to continuing to promote conservative values, representing my great constituents and continuing to fight to reign in the federal government," he said.

Stewart is a member of the House Appropriations Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

The 2nd Congressional District encompasses a wide swath of Utah, including Salt Lake City and the rural western and southern portions of the state, including St. George.

Utah's candidate filing period opened Friday and closes next Thursday.
