ALTAMONT, Duchesne County — A 61-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning after being involved in what appears to be an accidental shooting, officials said.

Police responded to the L.C. Ranch near Altamont around 8:45 a.m. Initial investigation shows that two men were practicing long-range shooting at the ranch's private shooting range while the victim was marking targets for them, according to Sheriff's Lt. Jeremy Curry with the Duchesne County Sheriff's Office.

As the result of a communication error between one of the shooters and the victim, the victim was shot and killed.

The Duchesne County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. The name of the victim and the man who shot him are not being released at this time.

The victim was taken to the Utah State Medical Examiner's office. More details will be posted as they become available.
