KAYSVILLE — Following the tragic death of a 17-year-old Layton High student, community members are preparing to raise money for her family during a 5K walk and run event.

BaiLee DiBernardo was hit by a pickup truck Jan. 11 while she was at a crosswalk near the high school. She was then run over by a Dodge Durango.

On Saturday, Feb. 13, local gym CrossFit Kimokeo will host the 5K walk and run. BaiLee's mother and aunt are members of the gym, and BaiLee used to run its day care program during the summer, according to CrossFit Kimokeo office administrator Natalie Hancock.

With help from women who exercise alongside BaiLee's family members, Hancock has organized the 5K event, which will include a CrossFit-style workout and a silent auction.

"We just want to help them financially as much as we possibly can so that their grieving process is a little bit easier," Hancock said.

The CrossFit gym was named "Kimokeo" — Hawaiian for "Timothy" — after the co-owner's brother, Timothy Byrd, who died in a car accident in 2013.

Following his death, the community rallied for a 5K event.

"There was such an outpouring … of support and love, and we just figured what better way to help them out than do what we did and help them with this experience as much as we can?" Hancock said.

Local businesses have donated a variety of items for the silent auction, including gift certificates for manicures and pedicures, athletic wear, jewelry and more.

All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to BaiLee's family. All the event participants will receive a T-shirt.

The 5K will be held at CrossFit Kimokeo at 844 W. 300 North in Kaysville. Participants can check in at 7:30 a.m., and the run starts at 8 a.m. The CrossFit workout starts at 9.

Individual registration is $35 and families of three, four and five can get in for $65, $85 and $100 respectively. Families larger than five will pay $35 per person after the $100 family price.

To sign up for the event, visit the event page.

"The camaraderie we have here and what it does to bring each other together when we gather for events like this, it's just such an outpouring feeling of love and concern for one another and it really just draws us together...makes us stronger," Hancock said.
