PROVO — He's a legend at BYU — a Heisman Trophy winner and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Now Ty Detmer is back at BYU to tackle a new challenge.

The former Cougar standout from 1987-91 said now is the right time for his first jump to Division I college football.

'"This was a place I wanted to be," Detmer said. "BYU is a special place for me, and I wouldn't have just gone anywhere," Detmer said. "I had it pretty good down (in Texas). I feel like this was the right place to be."

Working with fellow BYU alums in new head coach Kalani Sitake and assistant head coach Ed Lamb helped, too.

"Kalani has played here, and he understands the atmosphere around here," Detmer said. "He wanted to get that feel back of guys that guys were welcome around. We wanted that homey feel. He wants us to be good husbands, good fathers … and not sit here and grind all night.

"I felt comfortable with his attitude and demeanor, but it was mostly the timing of things."
