VORONEZH, Russia — Residents in a Russian neighborhood rescued a dog two days after she was buried under a sidewalk during repairs.

Vadim Rustam says in the original video description that workers were recently in the area, repairing a large hole in the sidewalk in their neighborhood. Shortly thereafter, he, his wife and others heard barking coming from under the cobblestones.

Rustam and his wife asked authorities to help, but they refused, so Rustam decided to try to rescue the dog himself.

The video shows Rustam using a chisel and a hammer to carefully pry up several cobblestones, revealing the pregnant dog that has since been named Belka. Rustam gently helps Belka out as his tearful wife encourages the dog.

Pregnant dogs often find a den before they give birth, so Belka more than likely burrowed in the open hole on her own before the repairs. However, Rustam was unsure if the workers simply didn't know the dog was there while they were repairing the sidewalk or if they didn't care, according to the CNN report.

Unfortunately, none of Belka's puppies survived. But thanks to donations, Belka received the further medical care she needed and will soon be adopted.
