PROVO — BYU has seen plenty of national attention in its quick rise during the first two weeks of the college football season.
But it's not as quick as one local musician's "tribute" to the team and its penchant for Hail Mary finishes.
Provo musician James Curran, also known as James the Mormon, put together a rap about BYU football's 2-0 start to the season, including a tribute to injured quarterback Taysom Hill and freshman Tanner Mangum.
Curran started thinking about the song after witnessing BYU's 25-24 triumph over then-No. 20 Boise State on Saturday night, and two days later, he sat down at 1 a.m. to put the words together.
By 3 a.m., he had a song — and good friend Sam Wilder, a videographer with BYU athletics, had set up a shoot to make the music video and post it to the BYU football video YouTube channel.
"When I have an idea, I cannot fail to implement it," said Curran, who has lived in Provo since finishing a mission for the LDS Church four years ago. "I go full steam ahead if I like an idea. I don't stop until it is done."
The song and video titled: "Dreamin: a BYU football tribute" was released on YouTube and Soundcloud Thursday afternoon, and it quickly amassed nearly 1,000 plays on the popular music-and-audio service.
For the video, Curran reached out to Wilder, who gathered together several football players for the video shoot, including Mangum and wide receiver Mitch Juergens, who caught the second game-winner Saturday night against Boise State.
Within 48 hours, the two creative artists had a track and accompanying music video written, shot, edited and ready to publish Thursday.
"I couldn't do anything that I do without Sam," Curran said. "He's behind the camera, but he deserves just as much credit for everything I do."
