PROVO — Madie Siddoway came to BYU women's soccer as a heralded freshman, an all-state player out of Sky View High and capable of earning a starting spot in her college team's competitive midfield.

On Friday night, she cemented herself into the starting lineup — and BYU history — with her first collegiate goal.

Siddoway's goal just 14 minutes into the match proved to be the game winner, and No. 9 BYU went on to claim its fourth straight shutout to open the season with a 2-0 victory over rival Utah in front of a record crowd of 5,620 at South Field in Provo.

"I felt it, kind of, when I took the shot. I hit, and I felt it," said Siddoway, who scored on only her second shot on goal. "We had been practicing shots yesterday, so it felt good to see it go in the goal."

Siddoway's goal was the first of her BYU career, a breaking ball from the right elbow on a shot that dipped inside the far post for the 1-0 advantage. The freshman from Sky View High finished off a corner kick that started with Paige Hunt, caromed off Bizzy Phillips' head and bounced to the North Logan native as she dribbled to the edge of the area.

Siddoway turned away from the goal then spun back around and fired a left-footed shot that beat Utah goalkeeper Lindsey Luke at the last second to help BYU (4-0) to its 20th win over the Utes in program history.

"The feeling was just amazing, to watch the ball go in the back of the net and to feel that I have helped my team accomplish something that we've worked so hard for," Siddoway said.

Her coach called the goal "phenomenal."

"I'm so excited for Sid to come in as a freshman and earn a starting spot, and then to score her first collegiate goal against Utah," BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "I'm sure she won't forget that one."

The goal continued BYU's streak of strong starts, as the team has tallied at least one goal in the first 20 minutes of each of the Cougars' four games to start the 2015 season.

"That's always our goal, and we challenge the girls to see how early we can score," Rockwood said. "I thought we brought a lot of energy and attacked well in the first half."

Nadia Gomes doubled the advantage eight minutes later, scoring her second goal of the season off a free kick that caromed off the Utah wall and skipped inside the right post to give the Cougars a 2-0 halftime advantage.

The defense would do the rest.

Rachel Boaz made seven saves to stretch her season-opening shutout streak to 355 minutes in goal, and center backs Stephanie Ringwood and Taylor Campbell Isom held Utah forward Mariah Elmer without a shot in the second half and only three shots through 90 minutes.

The Utes (2-2-1) outshot the Cougars 20-17 but only managed seven shots on frame to BYU's 10 even as they threw numbers into the offensive third for most of the final 30 minutes.

"A phenomenal job by Taylor and Stephanie, who had their hands full," Rockwood said. "Rachel continues to be a great presence for us in the back, and she came up with some big saves tonight to make sure we secured the win."

No save was bigger for Boaz than a save on Megan Trabert's point-blank shot in the 89th minute that the junior San Diego State transfer flipped up and over the crossbar. The Cougars cleared the corner kick even as Luke abandoned her goal and held on to give Boaz a 355-minute shutout streak.

BYU travels to No. 2 Stanford for a Monday match at 6 p.m. PT. The game will be broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network.

"It's really exciting. We knew coming in that we were going to have a very challenging nonconference schedule, and it's certainly lived up to be that," Rockwood said. "We really look forward to it; (Stanford) is a great program."
