LEHI — Kelly Kraft fired seven birdies and an eagle to card a 9-under 63, breaking a course record, on the first day of the Web.com Tour's Utah Championship at Thanksgiving Point golf club.

Kraft broke a three-way tie for the course record of 64, held by Steve Schneiter and Jimmy Blair in competition and BYU alum Mike Weir in a casual round.

The 27-year-old Texas native leads Ryan Spears by three strokes going into Friday's second day.

Eight players shot 67 in beautiful conditions on the first day to finish tied for third.

The second round starts at 7:20 a.m. Friday. Kraft will tee off at 1:13 p.m.
