SOUTH SALT LAKE — Two women are in critical condition after the van they were driving in rolled Sunday morning.

About 5:30 a.m. Sunday a van traveling westbound on 3900 South in South Salt Lake struck another vehicle near 250 West, forcing the van off the roadway down an embankment before the overpass in the area, according to South Salt Lake spokesperson Gary Keller.

The van rolled down the embankment, crossing the FrontRunner rail lines before coming to a stop upside down on Union Pacific rail lines, Keller said.

Two women in their 20s were in the van, according to Keller. The driver of the van was ejected, while the passenger remained in the vehicle. Both were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. Keller said the driver, though, sustained life-threatening injuries.

The other vehicle involved was damaged but no injuries were sustained. Keller said officers would investigate the cause of the incident Sunday morning, but that an initial cause was unknown.

Keller said FrontRunner and Union Pacific lines were closed until the scene was cleared. Westbound 3900 South was also closed for much of the morning.
