LEHI — Lehi building inspectors on Monday examined a deck that collapsed during a Fourth of July barbecue, injuring four people.

"Our building inspectors found that the bolts that attached the deck to the house came loose, causing the deck to collapse," said Lehi Assistant City Administrator Robert Ranc.

Saturday, 15 people were on a deck in back of the house near 2000 N. Hidden Creek Drive, when it collapsed just before 7 p.m. Tables and a grill were also on the deck at the time.

Four people were transported to a local hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening. One man suffered a serious back injury, according to officials.

"The deck was built with the house in 2002 and properly permitted," Ranc said. "Since there is no criminal investigation, the rest of the matter will be handled privately by the family."

The Lehi incident happened on the same night that at least 24 people were injured, two critically, when a deck collapsed at a North Carolina beach house while a family was preparing to take a group photo.

North Carolina officials determined that nails deteriorated by years of exposure to the sand, salt and moisture from the ocean gave way, causing the 30-year-old structure to collapse.
