Someone called in a fight Monday night just be for 9 p.m. near 31 N. State St., police said. However, when officers arrived, they found a man with a stab wound saying he had been robbed. The man told police when he resisted, the robber stabbed him and then ran away into Temple Square.
"Surveillance video from LDS security showed that the suspect changed his shirt from a white tank top to black T-shirt," according to a prepared statement from police. Police added that he was last seen exiting Temple Square from the Main Street Plaza at South Temple.
Police said it's a rare case because of where it happened.
“It's not an area where we see a whole lot of robberies and street crime,” said Salt Lake Police Lt. Brian Purvis.
The victim's wounds were considered "superficial" and he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, Purvis said. The description police had of the alleged attacker was a white man in his 40s with short brown hair who was last seen carrying a backpack and wearing blue jeans with the black T-shirt.
Police were unsure Tuesday of a possible motive for the attack or whether it was random.
Anyone with information on the attack can call police at 801-799-3000.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
