SALT LAKE CITY — Locally-formed Imagine Dragons is making headlines again after its newest album reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums each week by tracking traditional album sales, track-equivalent albums and streaming equivalent albums, according to Billboard.

Grammy-award winning Imagine Dragons released the “Smoke + Mirrors” album Feb. 17 and it has since moved 195,000 units to claim the top slot, Billboard said. It shifted more units than any other album on the chart from Feb. 22-25, according to an Imagine Dragons news release.

“Smoke + Mirrors” has sold 172,000 copies since its release, making it the band’s biggest sales week and also the band’s first No. 1 album, Billboard said. The new album doubled Imagine Dragon’s previous best sales week of 83,000 album sales for its first full-length album, “Night Visions.” “Night Visions” peaked at No. 2, but is still on the Billboard 200 chart, currently at No. 20.

The band has several Utah ties and considers Provo as one of its “original stomping grounds.” Imagine Dragons kicked off its album release by going back to four of the cities where they first started out, including a performance at Provo’s Velour Saturday.

Imagine Dragons is also well-known for being interactive with its fans, including hiding clues on its album cover that led to a buried treasure and performing a benefit concert for a Utahn with cancer.
