SANDY — A 10-year-old boy reported missing in Sandy Tuesday night returned home safely Wednesday morning.

Donevin Smith was riding a bicycle when he showed up at his home around 7:30 a.m. He said he had spent the night at a friend's home.

Smith was playing at a different friend's home, in the area of 9000 South and 280 East, when his mother asked him to come home around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The two apparently got into an argument and the boy was sent home, about four blocks away, but never arrived.

His family searched for him, then called police around 11:30 p.m.

Officers searched the area and a reverse 911 call was set up. Police did not believe he was abducted.

"Because of his age, it obviously heightens our concern," said Sgt. Jon Arnold of the Sandy Police Department.

Smith did not realize he had been reported missing. He said he played x-box at his friend's house Tuesday night. The friend's parents did not realize Smith had not called home.

Smith's parents said he is now grounded.

Police said they did not mind searching for the boy and are glad for the positive outcome.

"We are public servants," Arnold said.

Updates will be posted as they become available.
