PROVO — A 10-year-old boy has become a popular philanthropist with a lemonade stand in Utah County.
Zack Froncom and his family have been busy baking cookies, getting their yard ready and putting signs throughout the community to get everything ready for his lemonade stand, Zack’s Shack.
But it isn’t your typical lemonade stand.
For the fifth year in a row, Zack is raising money through his lemonade stand and other sources to buy wheelchairs for people in need.
“It’s great to see your kid do something so worthwhile as far as serving and giving back to the community and also see him grow and develop as his confidence and his excitement and enthusiasm for serving,” said Danny Bird, Zack’s stepfather.
Last year he raised enough money to buy 205 wheelchairs, including 30 directly from the lemonade stand proceeds. Additionally, Zack’s efforts won him a grant to pay for 175 more.
With help from his mom, aunts and grandmas, Zack is making 350 dozen cookies to sell along with the lemonade.
“My favorite flavor is snickerdoodle. But last year the most-sold cookie was the sugar cookie because they have cream cheese frosting on them,” Zack said.
Zack's parents say their son came up with the idea for his lemonade stand in first grade, and each year he takes on more of the responsibility. This year Zack will be selling T-shirts as well.
He said it’s worth the hard work when he thinks about the people he’s helping.
“That makes me feel good that they now have a way to move, because I don’t know where I’d be if I couldn’t move and play and stuff,” Zack said.
Zack’s Shack is open Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 556 E. Center St. in Provo.
