Nick's two dogs are both Redbone Hounds. An American breed deriving from crosses between Bloodhounds and Foxhounds. Two of the most famous redbone hounds come from a 1961 novel by Wilson Rawls about a boy named Billy who buys and trains two Redbone Coonhound hunting dogs in the novel Where the Red Fern Grows.
