PLEASANT GROVE — Alisha Nuttall's sweet treats earned her a winner's spot among "Cupcake War" contestants Sunday.
Sunday's show was the second appearance Nuttall, of Cravings Cupcakes, has made on "Cupcake Wars." After losing the first episode but winning over audiences, Nuttall was invited back for redemption to compete against four past contestants who had been cut in other episodes.
The self-taught baker won the recent competition with three of her most popular cupcakes: fruit pizza, Better Than What!, and carrot cake cupcakes. A fourth cupcake, which had to include secret ingredients presented by the show, was made with bleu cheese and Pop Rocks.
"We made a chocolate cupcake and we filled it with a balsamic, strawberry, pepper filling and then we topped it with Roqueford bleu cheese and then added Pop Rocks," Nuttall said. "They didn't like the balsamic and they didn't like the pepper. They liked everything, but they thought that was too much. So we actually took that out at the end ... and they liked that better."
I felt like everything I had worked so hard for finally came true. ... It finally made me think that I could open a shop.
The episode was filmed in July. She said winning the show gave her the confidence she needed to open a storefront in November.
"I felt like everything I had worked so hard for finally came true. I didn't have a storefront, so it made me get a storefront. It finally made me think that I could open a shop," Nuttall said.
Nuttall started selling her cupcakes four years ago with her twin sister, Angela Wilson. Wilson has since opened her own restaurant, Cravings Bistro, in American Fork, where she makes gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches.
Wilson and Nuttall worked as a team on both episodes of "Cupcake Wars" that have aired, and they have since filmed a third episode together.
Nuttall turned out the baked goods from her home for some time before beginning a partnership with Quincee's Boutique. After the July filming and win of "Cupcake Wars," she opened her own shop on Pleasant Grove's Main Street.
