SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man died in the hospital after a TRAX train struck his car that was on the tracks Wednesday.

The northbound train hit a vehicle crossing at 200 West on 2950 South. Rescue crews reportedly extricated 57-year-old Larry R. Aullman, of Salt Lake, from the car.

He was transferred to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There was no immediate word on why the vehicle was on the TRAX line or if the driver had gone around the crossing arms, which were operating, UTA Police Cpt. Jason Petersen said.

One passenger said she jumped out of the train after it hit the car and helped the driver.

"I reached in and talked to him, and was trying to hold his head still, stroke his head, so he knew somebody was with him," Barbara Hake said.

Passengers remained on the train while police and fire crews worked to extricate the man from the car but were later transferred.

The accident has affected TRAX travel in both directions. The Utah Transit Authority has set up a bus bridge between stations at 3300 South and 2100 South.
