As current Cougars like Kyle Van Noy, Riley Stephenson and Ezekiel "Ziggy" Ansah rack up awards and attention across the nation, a BYU blast from the past entered the College Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday.
An All-American quarterback and 1990 Heisman Trophy winner, Ty Detmer was officially inducted in the hall of fame at the 55th National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner in New York City, becoming the seventh Cougar to enter the nationally celebrated hall.
The repertoire of Detmer is a lengthy one, and to his many fans, his induction into the hall of fame was a long-time coming. Not only does he hold his own with a Heisman and All-American team titles, but Detmer's also the accomplished owner of a Maxwell Award, two Davey O'Brien awards and (at the time of the end of his college career) 59 NCAA records.
"I'm definitely very proud to be here," said Detmer. "To me, there is nothing better than college football and all that goes along with it. I'm proud to be here to accept this award, and I think it's really representative of the team you played on and the coaches you played for. And I'm proud to be representing that group."
Detmer, who graced BYU with his skills in 1988 through 1991, left the university as one of the "more accomplished players in the history of college football," according to NFF President and CEO Steve Hatchell.
During Detmer's college football tenure, the Cougars won three conference championships, went to four bowl games, finishing in the AP Top 25 three times and registered a monumental 28-21 victory over defending national champion Miami.
Totaling 15,031 passing yards and 121 touchdowns, Detmer's numbers were NCAA's best of all time when he graduated.
"He just about did everything as a Cougar that a college quarterback can do. He is a truly deserving member of the College Football Hall of Fame," Hatchell said.
