PROVO — It was a good week for the BYU basketball program — both men’s and women’s teams.
And the Cougars were adequately rewarded Monday by the West Coast Conference.
BYU guards TJ Haws and Brenna Chase were named WCC men’s and women’s basketball players of the week, respectively, the conference announced on Presidents’ Day.
Haws, a junior who prepped at Lone Peak, averaged 24.0 points, 7.5 assists and 1.5 steals in a pair of wins at San Diego and Loyola Marymount this past week that helped the Cougars keep ahold of second place in the league standings.
The week included a career-high 35 points in BYU’s 88-82 overtime win over the Toreros, including 20 points, four assists and two steals down the stretch. The Cougars then rallied from 14-down to surge past LMU, 70-62, Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars face a critical home test Thursday against San Francisco. Tipoff between the two teams separated by 1.5 games in the WCC standings is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT on BYUtv and KSL Newsradio.
Chase registered back-to-back double-digit scoring games in wins at Portland and Gonzaga. The junior guard from Thornton, Colorado, hit four 3-pointers en route to 14 points, five assists, three rebounds and two blocks in a 66-64 win at then-No. 13 Gonzaga that completed a season sweep of the Bulldogs.
Adding to the honors, BYU softball swept the WCC player and pitcher of the week. Junior outfielder Rylee Jensen, who batted. 800 with three homers against UTEP and Fordham in Las Vegas, was named player of the week. Autumn Moffatt pitched a complete-game against Georgetown and came on in relief against UTEP to earn wins in both games. She allowed no earned runs to go with 14 strikeouts, including fanning a career-high eight against the Miners.
