SALT LAKE CITY — Center stations and dedicated bus lanes for the Utah Transit Authority’s UVX bus rapid transit system will officially open in Provo and Orem Monday.

The UVX — short for Utah Valley Express — route has 5 miles of dedicated bus lanes, according to a news release on UTA’s website. The system is intended to reduce wait times for buses and ease riders’ commute during peak travel times.

UTA officials ask motorists not to drive in the dedicated bus lanes and to yield to buses in areas where lanes are shared.

Drivers will notice the UVX line will have “unique signaling that allows it to travel through intersections when other traffic is stopped,” officials said.

Similar to TRAX and Frontrunner, riders can only board and exit at UVX stations. The following UVX center stations will open Monday:

  • Lakeview
  • Main Street
  • University Place
  • 2230 North
  • Academy Square
  • 300 North
  • Center Street
  • 400 South

Pedestrians trying to reach any center station are asked to cross only at designated crossings, officials said.

In addition to Monday’s openings, southbound UVX buses will run the entire route to East Bay, officials said. Those riding northbound from East Bay will now require a transfer at the southwest corner of the bus island at Provo Central Station if they wish to continue north, officials added.

UTA plans to have volunteers stationed throughout its UVX stations to address any questions or concerns riders may have. Riders can also contact UTA by phone at 801-743-3882 or via UTA’s twitter account.

UTA officials also remind riders of various bus and rail schedule changes that go into effect between Sunday and Monday. Those changes can be viewed here.

The UVX system began operating on Aug. 13, and is free to all riders thanks to a Federal Highway Administration grant.
